I have been struggling with what my future will look like. Will I get married? Will I do missions? What does God have for me? Someone close to me referred me to Psalm 37. Verse 4 in particular: Delight yourself in the Lord, and He will give you the desires of your heart. I seriously questioned and doubted this biblical truth.

I thought, "How can I matter to God? Why would He care for me? Why would He give me good things?" I doubted. "He is not going to give me the desires of my heart - Why would he? He gains nothing from loving me." That is far from the truth.

I was up several nights wrestling with this. I decided to embrace the questions and doubts and list them. I came up with these six questions:

  1. Is Psalm 37:4 a catch-22? Doesn't He just become your heart's desire, and you don't want anything else?

  2. Does God care about the desires of my heart? Why would He want anything for me that doesn't have to do with him?

  3. Do I trust God with my future? Do I trust my future marriage, life, and career?

  4. Does God care about our happiness?

  5. Why do I struggle with trusting God so much? Why can't I trust him with my future?

  6. How can God care about me and my heart when a world of suffering exists?

I decided to sit down in a coffee shop one morning and list the things that are true about God from scripture. I wrote down all these things with a skeptical heart but was willing to listen and change. I planned to write it out and do my best to trust it and trust that God will fill in any of the gaps of my unbelief. As I was writing, I decided I wanted to share what I found in hopes of helping others.

My goal is to write and share all these truths as a series. I chose the title Coffee Shop Questions as a reminder of where God met me. I hope that the answers God shared with me will also encourage you.
