Could God Care about the desires of my heart?
Why would he want something for me that doesn't have anything to do with him?
I often wonder: "How could God care for me, and my desires." I think it comes from a deeper doubt about God and His love. If I doubt that God loves me, then I can doubt his care for me, and then I can doubt His wants for me are good. But, if I am full of faith and assurance that God loves me, then these doubts are not only untrue but complete nonsense.
Here is the truth: God loves you. He sent His only son to die for you. His word says, "God shows his love for us through this: even though we were still sinners, Christ died for us" (Romans 5:8). This is truth, meaning it stands firm even when we doubt.
Because of this truth, Then God must care for us. In fact, scripture tells us to put our anxieties on him because "He cares for us" (1 Peter 5:7). So when I question, "Could God care about the desires of my heart," Scripture responds, "Yes, child, I do."
As I was wrestling with this truth in the coffee shop, I was brought to Psalm 139. I settled on some truths about how God thinks of each of us:
Verse 1: He has searched and known you
Verse 4: He knows the words of your mouth before they reach your tongue
Verse 6: His thoughts of you are too high for you to attain
Verse 13: He puts you together (He made your desires)
Verse 14: His works are wonderful (You are his work)
Verse 16: You are not hidden from God (He has written your story)
Verse 17: God thinks of you
Verse 18: His thoughts of you outweigh all the sand of the seashores
I recently took a trip to Thailand and visited a small island. As I lay on the sand and felt each of those tiny, microscopic grains, I thought of verse 18: His thoughts of me outweigh all the sand on the seashores. So many grains of sand, unmeasurable, and this is what God says about how much he thinks of me? Inspiring!
God wants to be a good father and give good gifts to you. We see this in His son Jesus. For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life (Romans 6:23). Jesus dying for our sins is this free, good gift from God. And our salvation is just the start of many gifts to come.
We get to share in Christ's riches. Once we become children of God, we become brothers and sisters with Christ. And if we are brothers and sisters of Christ, we are Coheirs with him as well (Romans 8:17). All the riches God spent on Christ are available to us through him. Although we may share his sufferings as well, the good gifts of God far better outweigh them.
God is the God of our desires. Every good thing we desire comes from God. He has fashioned our hearts and desires together. When our first desire is to know God, the rest falls into place. He puts good things in our hearts that he wants for us. Greater things than we could ever imagine.
